About Massage
The scientific essence of massage is a “system reboot,” far more than just muscle relaxation. When you’re stressed, your body enters a “battle mode” dominated by the sympathetic nervous system, like a race car speeding at high speed. Massage can forcibly activate the parasympathetic nervous system’s “rest mode.” This switch cannot be consciously controlled, but the warmth of physical contact can “trick” the body into entering a safe state.
Physiological Changes
Key physiological changes include: a decrease in cortisol of over 30%, and a simultaneous increase in serotonin and dopamine of 30%, creating a “chemical storm” within the body. The unique tactile sensation of massage releases oxytocin (the “hug hormone”), bringing a feeling of being cared for. Serotonin, as a precursor to melatonin, naturally promotes quality sleep. Simultaneously, accelerated blood circulation delivers nutrients to muscles, clears lactic acid and inflammatory substances, and facilitates deep repair.
Essentially, massage is a necessary maintenance process that switches the body from “battle mode” to “maintenance mode,” much like a race car undergoing pit maintenance, allowing the body to better prepare for the next challenge.
The Pain Paradox
The pain recovery process begins after a massage. The increased muscle soreness after a massage doesn’t mean the massage is ineffective; rather, it’s a short-term signal of the body’s repair.
The massage techniques applied to tense muscles and fascia are like untangling a tightly twisted thread, loosening adhesions and activating deep circulation. This causes local microvessels to dilate, temporarily increasing metabolic waste, and slightly stretching muscle fibers, naturally leading to soreness. This is especially true for the first massage or when the technique is slightly stronger, as the body hasn’t yet adapted to this external intervention.
Only temporary
Just like the soreness from suddenly stretching after a long period of inactivity, this is a normal reaction. This pain won’t last long. As blood circulation accelerates and metabolic waste is removed, the muscles gradually adapt to the relaxed state, and the pain slowly subsides, replaced by a feeling of overall relaxation and ease.
Consider this a transitional phase in the body’s restart process. With a little rest afterward, the muscles will become more flexible after relaxation.
